Amy Boerma received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1989 and her Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in 2007. She has been a high school band director at Plymouth Canton Educational Park since 1994. Under her direction, the Symphony Band, Concert Band and Varsity Band have received nothing but first division ratings at District and State Band Festivals. Mrs. Boerma and her bands have gotten accolades from world reknown composer and conductors, Elliot Del Borgo, Anthony Meillo, and Arnald Gabriel.
Mrs. Boerma is an active judge and clinician with the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. She was the keynote speaker for The Eastern Michigan University’s chapter of Tau Beta Sigma Sorority’s Series: Women in Music Education and has been named numerous times on the list of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She presented a clinic at the Michigan Music Conference in 2006 introducing methods for teaching students to hear and play in tune.
Mrs. Boerma has been the music education representative for District XII MSBOA executive board as well as the Vice President for Solo and Ensemble for the past two years. She was inducted into the prestigious American School Band Directors Association in 2007 and was voted MSBOA District XII Band Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Boerma has been teaching sectionals and school music programs since 1980. Starting her sophomore year at the University of Illinois, Boerma became a trumpet clinician for the University band program, running sectionals for a variety of ensembles. She enjoyed the role of drum major with the U. of Illinois Marching Illini and was appointed a position as graduate assistant her senior year. Her first full-time job was Director of Music at L’Anse Creuse High School in 1990-1992, where her three concert bands, marching band, and choir all received first division ratings under her direction. She and her band were awarded the first-ever school spirit award for the role they played within the school.
As a student, Boerma studied privately with top trumpet players across the country and played first trumpet in numerous honors bands and at music camps. She won the Outstanding Camper/Musician scholarship to the Interlochen National Music Camp and is proud to have had several of her PCEP students win the same honor. She has played trumpet under William D. Revelli, Harry Begian, Frederick Fennell, Col. Arnald Gabriel, and Dr. Mark Hindsley and has also received extensive private training in conducting and score study from James Keene at the University of Illinois.
Mrs. Boerma has conducted the PCEP Wind Ensemble at the Midwestern Conference (now named the Michigan Music Conference) in Ann Arbor and at the Spring Conference on Wind and Percussion Music in Kalamazoo. She has also conducted the PCEP Symphony Band at the Bands of America Regional Concert Band Festival in Dallas and the PCEP Wind Ensemble at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Boerma is the office manager and creative consultant for Madison Music Works, which creates and ships music all over the world.
